DOCUMENT REPRESENTATION WITH IMAGES: AN EXPERIMENTAL MILESTONE
Last modified: 2018-03-01
Abstract
In this work the concept of interfaces for documentary systems is revisited from the perspective of an iOPAC (imaged Open Access Catalog) to meet the needs of a digital-adapted indexing. The suggested methodology presupposes a conceptual model for indexing with images, which is supposed to have a document/key-image correspondence in the user-system interaction process. This cognitive initiative is expected to be less dependent on users' oralisation, and more assistive in information literacy. An experimental protocol was then carried out to validate these principles, tested in a group of 26 sign language (SL) students and 31 library students. A documentary corpus of 50 scientific articles was used in purpose. The results confirmed the working hypothesis for 53% of the SL students and for 89% of the library students, reinforcing the proposed indexing with images methodology for documentary systems interfaces.
