Abstract

Investigate the development and growth of the area of Organization and Management of Libraries, compulsory discipline of the curricular matrices of the courses of Bachelor in Librarianship and Teacher Training in Librarianship in Brazil. In a preliminary analysis of the basic and complementary bibliography indicated by the programs of the disciplines offered by the Librarianship courses, most of them are edited works at the end of the last century. These works are recurrently mentioned by the various consulted programs, a phenomenon that is also repeated with classic international authors of the Management. The question that raises the research on screen is: what is new being researched, published and cited in the area of organization and management of libraries and information units in Brazil? What development and growth is evident in the area? States of art can make an important contribution in the constitution of the theoretical field of an area of knowledge, since they seek to identify the significant contributions of the construction of theory and pedagogical practice, to point out the restrictions on the field in which the research moves, its gaps in dissemination, identifying innovative research experiences that point out alternative solutions to the problems of practice, and recognizing the contributions of research in the constitution of proposals in the focused area (ROMANOWSKI and ENS, 2006). The research aims to map the development and growth of the area of Organization and Management of Libraries from the mapping of scientific production in Brazil, published after the years 2000. For this purpose, it intends to analyze the national and foreign bibliography used for teaching the area ; inventory the scientific production published in formal publication channels and its main characteristics; identify research groups registered with CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) and their academic-scientific productions; and examine the most recurrent and emerging issues in the period. This is a qualitative-quantitative research. Qualitative because it subjectively analyzes the relations found in the research and quantitative by numerically considering the scientific production in different formal channels of communication. Preliminary results indicate the existence of 49 undergraduate courses in Librarianship and one in Teacher Training in Librarianship in Brazil offered by 48 higher education institutions in Brazil. Of these 31 are offered by public universities and 12 by private universities. There are also 5 offered by distance learning. The Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO) is the only one that offers the Teacher Training in Librarianship in Brazil. The scientific production published in formal publication channels is being researched in the printed and electronic records of the Brazilian Congresses of Librarianship and Documentation occurred after the year 2000 (9 in all), by thematic areas. Qualis / CAPES (A1, A2 and B1) were selected for the research in scientific journals. In this way it is expected to reveal the scientific productivity and present the state of the art of the area. These discoveries will compose a current theoretical-conceptual framework and will allow the direct application in classroom teaching and in the planning and updating of the program content courses in Librarianship.
